I was really surprised by the freshness of the vegetables. I just wanted a place where I could get some good tacos. ![]() J was really craving Mexican and this place hit the spot. Our bill was just over $18 and Cancun was worth the drive out to Paw Paw. She was stuffed at that point and offered it to me….but I was feeling the same way. The tamal was a beef tamali and she was afraid to try it. The flauta was the second thing to go and it was also something she seemed to really enjoy. The shell was crunchy and the toppings were piled on and very fresh. The tostada was her favorite part of the plate. The entree portion of the plate consisted of a tamal, a flauta, and a tostada. She ate a little of each, but didn’t say much about the typical Mexican sides. The plate consisted of the usual refried beans and Spanish rice. J found a combo plate on the menu and ordered the #4. It was kind of to the point that it was a little too spicy. The sausage was very spicy and there was a large amount of it. I really wished at that point that I had ordered all four tacos with steak, but I was really looking forward to the chorizo as well. The strips of meat were well seasoned flat top grilled beef. The steak tacos were absolutely delicious. I usually pick most of the veggies off and just enjoy the meat and tortilla, but I left quite a bit of lettuce….and if a few onions and tomatoes stuck around, they blended in to the fresh lettuce. All of them were corn tortillas with the meat, lettuce, onion, and tomatoes. J was more in the mood for Mexican than I was so I kept things pretty simple and just ordered four tacos. Those two flavors were very prominent in this salsa and to a normal person, that would be a great thing, so I can’t really consider it a bad thing. The problem is, I don’t really like the taste of tomatoes or onions….which are two key ingredients in almost any salsa. This is something I can’t really believe I’m about to type. The salsa came out with two dipping cups so we didn’t have to share. The chips were home made tortilla chips that had a dusting of salt. We did each get one refill, but neither of us were able to finish the second glass. The drinks were were brought out in large plastic cups that lasted us pretty much through the entire meal. We put in drink orders for a Pepsi and an Aqua de Orchata. ![]() A waitress in the kitchen saw us sit down and came over with a couple menus and the customary chips and salsa. We didn’t see a wait to be seated sign, so I headed over to a booth along the front windows. The inside of the building is a rather large, brightly colored dining room. The building is very plain with a sign on either side of an entry way that just says “restaurant.” It’s on Red Arrow Highway on the west side of town. ![]() I have no idea if the two restaurants are still related but the Paw Paw restaurant is now Cancun Mexican Restaurant. I remembered really liking the place and I remembered that they used to have a sister restaurant in Paw Paw. By chance on a trip home one night, we pulled off the highway in Lawrence and happened to find Acapulco Mexican Restaurant. I was tired and still had to go to work later in the afternoon.Īfter some searching, I finally decided on leaving the Kalamazoo area. There are a couple outside of Kalamazoo that I’ve been wanting to go to, but traveling wasn’t really something I wanted to do. I was racking my brain for a new Mexican place to eat at and couldn’t think of one in Kalamazoo. Since I was awake, she asked if I just wanted to go out for lunch. She mentioned she was craving Mexican and was considering going to Qdoba to pick up something to eat. We really had no plans to go to lunch, but I had an early morning phone call that woke me up hours before I should have been up and J got home from work early.
